The 26.1.2 version of OBS for Mac is provided as a free download on our software library. The actual developer of this free Mac application is Open Broadcaster Software. The software is categorized as Audio & Video Tools. The most popular version among the application users is 0.6. Download and run obs-ndi-4.7.1-macOS.pkg. This will install both the plugin and the NDI 4.0+ Runtime. On macOS Catalina (or if it doesn't install the NDI runtime automatically), you'll have to download and install the NDI runtime manually: download it here. Note: the installer package is digitally signed, so macOS shouldn't complain. OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is free and open source software for video recording and live streaming. Stream to Twitch, YouTube and many other providers or record your own videos with high quality H264 / AAC encoding. This page has all software you might need for various platforms: Smartphone, MAC and PC. If you are a developer, click here to download the OBS Toolset source code.

A useful (but overlooked) feature in OBS Studio is its ability to save recordings. While the software is primarily used for live broadcasts to platforms like Twitch, YouTube Live, and Mixer, having access to recordings of your streams can be incredibly helpful too.

By having the raw recording of your stream, you can make all kinds of edits that the editing software of your livestream platform (like Twitch’s clips feature) does not allow you to do.

When you have access to the raw files of your livestream, the world is your oyster.

How to Save Recordings in OBS

OBS Studio does not automatically save recordings of your livestreams. In order to get OBS to save videos of your streams, you have to click “Start streaming” and then “Start recording.”

OBS also allows you to adjust how your streams are recorded by changing some of the settings.
We’ve outlined the steps for changing your stream recording settings with this easy-to-follow guide:

  • Open OBS and click the “File” button, then select “Settings” again from the list that drops down

  • On the left-hand panel of the Settings window, click “Output”

  • In the Output Settings, there is a list of options under “Recording” (it’s about one-third of the way down the page).

  • You can then choose the “Recording Path” which is the location where your OBS recordings will be saved.

  • You can also choose the quality of the recording and the type of file that your recordings will be saved as. “Same as stream” quality and the .flv recording format are fine as presets.

  • (To change the naming format of the recordings, go to the Advanced settings menu and change the “Filename Formatting” in the “Recording” section)

  • Once you’re happy with the settings you’ve entered here, click the “Apply” button in the bottom right-hand corner

  • Then, in the OBS Settings menu, click “OK” in the bottom right-hand corner to save your Settings

  • Run a test to make sure that your settings have been saved. When you start recording in OBS, on the bottom right, it will say “(LIVE + REC)” which confirms that you are streaming live and that the footage is being recorded.

Where Does OBS Save Recordings?

By default, OBS will save your stream recordings to wherever OBS is installed on your computer.

You should also remember that OBS recordings can potentially take up a lot of space on your hard drive. If you stream regularly (recommended for building your channel) or your streams tend to go on for hours and hours, then your recordings are going to be huge.

Even if your computer has a hard drive of 2TB, between the games and programs you’ve installed, you may run out of space. It’s recommended that you get an external hard drive. If you have an external hard drive you can also edit these clips when you’re on the move, or even hand the hard drive off to someone else to edit - this will make it a lot easier compared to putting those hefty files on a USB stick.

If you’ve chosen a fast external hard drive then you won’t be able to tell the difference between the files being saved on your main hard drive, compared to your external.

How to Change Where OBS Saves Recordings

You can enter the Output Settings menu in OBS in order to change the Recording Path (the location where your recordings are saved).

Click the “Browse” button next to Recording Path and choose a folder/storage location (your computer hard drive or an external hard drive or memory stick) for your saved recordings.

What Can You Do With Saved OBS Recordings?

With a saved recording, you can make video clips that can be turned into promotional videos that encourage more people to watch your channel. You could edit these clips into a full promotional trailer and post it on your YouTube channel if you wanted. Twitch only supports clips of up to 60 seconds, but you could make your own, longer clips instead.

You could make other marketing material (such as screenshots, phone wallpapers, and Twitter headers) or edit the videos to make highly shareable clips.

It also means that, should anything happen to the VODs of your streams hosted on Twitch, YouTube, or Mixer (if they’re taken down or edited by the platforms themselves), you’ll still have a version of that stream.
